Permit Requirements - Planning and Zoning Department - 235-3106
The City issues several kinds of permits. Here is a VERY brief review of the most commonly issued permits:
Sign Permits - If you are opening a new business or moving to a new location, you may need to get a new sign permit. Sign Code
To apply for a sign permit, fill out the form above, and include a picture or sketch of the new sign. Sign permits are currently $50 (fall 2005).
Zoning Permits - Homer does not have an adopted building code, however, all commercial construction must adhere to state law and adopted codes. Homer does have a zoning code, which deals with land use restrictions, parking, building setbacks, landscaping, density, and many other issues. When do I need a permit? All new construction and additions require a permit. Interior remodels do not, nor does standard maintenance like a roof replacement, or fence construction. However, when in doubt, give us a call! A quick phone call can save a lot of time by identifying any problems ahead of time! If you start construction BEFORE getting a zoning permit, the fee for the zoning permit will be increased. Change of Use Permit - When the use, i.e. type of business, changes in a commercial building, that requires a permit. For example, if a clothing store or art gallery is changed into a restaurant, you will need a permit. We are mainly checking to see that the proposed business fits within the zoning district, and that there is enough parking, as required by City Code.
I don't have time to deal with paperwork. Is there anyone I can hire to help me? Yes! See this attached list. The usual disclaimers apply. "Professional Services List"
